A Utah Valley University student this week has walked away with one of the top prizes in the 2009 Utah Film Commission “Spot On” Commercial Contest.
Kevin Bowden, a UVU digital media major from Murray, Utah was named the winner of the “Creative Concept Award.” The awards were announced Tuesday by the Utah Film Commission.
Bowden wins a cash award plus the opportunity to serve as director while a professional film crew, funded by the Utah Film Commission, will turn his one-man production into a full-blown Hollywood quality television commercial. Filming will take place this spring.
“You never know who’s going to see it and who might be impressed enough to remember me,” said Bowden, currently a junior in UVU’s digital media program.
Bowden’s 30-second commercial is titled “Utah: Paint Your Masterpiece,” and begins with a lonely painter standing in front of a blank canvas. Suddenly the artist begins hurling Utah-oriented items at the canvas such as snow, sand, hiking boots and the like. The camera then pulls back to reveal a completed, majestic painting of scenes from throughout the state.
For the past seven years, the UFC has held its “Spot On” Commercial Contest, giving the opportunity for local residents and those attending school in the state to submit originally created commercial spots to help promote Utah as a filming destination. The commercials were reviewed and judged by an independent group of industry professionals with backgrounds in film and advertising.
“Kevin is a pretty quiet guy,” said Jan Bentley, UVU’s digital media department chair. “But his filmmaking speaks volumes about his ability. We are certainly excited for him and we look forward to seeing his commercial on all the local channels beginning next summer.”
The 2009 competition included nearly 80 entries from students and studios throughout Utah.
