A group of public health students from Utah Valley University’s Public and Community Health Department recently planned, trained for, and presented a health fair for residents of Utah’s Wayne County. During the health fair, residents were able to have their blood glucose, body composition, blood pressure and pulse taken for free; the students also provided information about automobile and seatbelt safety and the dangers of tobacco use.

On Monday, Gina Gilson, site manager for Utah Valley University’s Capitol Reef Field Station, welcomed a group of students and faculty from the University’s English department. Her welcome included orientation information that every group who visits the field station receives, including an introduction to the field station, an explanation of the “house rules,” and a crash course on conservation — as part of their many conservation measures, the field station measures the water usage and garbage production of every group that stays onsite.

A group of UVU faculty and students recently returned from a 10-day education and service trip to Shandong Province in China. The trip included invaluable interaction with Chinese medical and health professionals and students in several different Chinese cities and provided a new perspective on environment and public health challenges faced by the Chinese people.

For years Jennilyn Jessop has driven a beat-up, worn out 1998 Astro Van. Last time she took it to the mechanic — which she has to do quite often — the news wasn’t good. “It was leaking coolant and oil, two of the doors didn’t work, it was barely surviving,” Jessop said. “He told me there were so many things wrong with it that it wasn’t worth putting any more money into it.”

The first-ever Utah Data Dive community service event, organized by Utah Valley University associate professor Barton Poulson and funded primarily through a University Grant for Engaged Learning will be held Friday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Sorensen Student Center and Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building room 101. The service project will benefit the Utah County Crisis Line and the Springville Art Museum.
