A group of UVU faculty and students recently returned from a 10-day education and service trip to Shandong Province in China. The trip included invaluable interaction with Chinese medical and health professionals and students in several different Chinese cities and provided a new perspective on environment and public health challenges faced by the Chinese people.

For years Jennilyn Jessop has driven a beat-up, worn out 1998 Astro Van. Last time she took it to the mechanic — which she has to do quite often — the news wasn’t good. “It was leaking coolant and oil, two of the doors didn’t work, it was barely surviving,” Jessop said. “He told me there were so many things wrong with it that it wasn’t worth putting any more money into it.”

The first-ever Utah Data Dive community service event, organized by Utah Valley University associate professor Barton Poulson and funded primarily through a University Grant for Engaged Learning will be held Friday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Sorensen Student Center and Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building room 101. The service project will benefit the Utah County Crisis Line and the Springville Art Museum.

Participants will enjoy the opportunity to network with industry professionals and other students, and winners will receive cash prizes totaling $7,500.

Utah Valley University has announced the interns who are spending this semester learning the ins and outs of government at a national, state and local level. Four students were selected as DC Experience interns and are serving in Washington, D.C. Three additional students are serving in the local offices of a Utah senator and a congressman. Six students are serving as interns in the Utah State legislature.

Brian Birch, director of Utah Valley University Religious Studies Program, has been elected to serve as a board member on the Council for a Parliament of World Religions, the oldest, largest and most inclusive gathering of people of all faiths and traditions. The election of Birch coincides with the Parliament’s preparation for its 2015 worldwide conference, which will be held in Salt Lake City.
