Utah Valley University (UVU) officials said data released today by the Utah System of Higher Education indicate that UVU is for the third straight year the largest public university in Utah in total headcount, which was 37,282 for the 2017 fall semester, an increase of more than 6.5 percent over one year ago.

Full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment is 25,037, up more than 5.5 percent. Forty-five percent of the student body are females. Students from historically under-represented populations such as Hawaiian natives, Pacific Islanders, Latinos, and Asians increased as well.

“This growth shows UVU’s responsiveness to the increasing population of Utah County, but that’s only part of the story,” said UVU President Matthew S. Holland. “We take these numbers as a testament of our ability to meet the growing needs of our service region and the success of our dual-model mission and focus on engaged learning.”

The University’s open admissions policy and dual-model educational mission, i.e. offering pathways ranging from vocational training to master’s degrees under one roof, have helped fuel the increase. During 2017, UVU added programs (including five new master’s degrees) and buildings (the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism, the NUVI Social Media Command Center, and the NUVI Basketball Center).

“We are humbled by the generous commitment and support we receive from the legislature, community members, and others who have helped make this happen,” said Holland. “UVU students contribute to our valley and state in meaningful, profound ways and we are confident they will continue to do so.”
