Throughout November, the UVU and BYU alumni associations will combine efforts to raise donations for Community Action Services & Food Bank’s annual food drive and giving campaign, Valley United Against Hunger. Students, alumni and community members are encouraged to participate beginning Nov. 1 and running throughout the entire month. Donations will be collected in three forms: food barrels, donation cards and online giving.
Organizers of this year’s campaign hope to top last year’s efforts. In 2012, donors gave $35,600; the goal for 2013 is $37,000.
“We’re overwhelmed with the support we’ve already received in the community for this important, alumni-driven service project,” said Jeri Allphin, director of the UVU Alumni Association. “After our experiences last year, we have made improvements and expect to achieve our service goals again. The valley is certainly uniting against hunger and doing something to help the community.”
According to Community Action Services & Food Bank, one in five Utah County households with children experience food hardship. A single $1 donation can provide five meals or 15 pounds of food to a Utah County family in need.
Many departments and student groups from both universities will be participating in the month-long service project, offering ideas and assistance on executing this philanthropic effort. At UVU, the Bookstore and UVU Dining Services will be offering donation cards starting at $1 to patrons at the register. Purchased donation cards will be displayed on the art wall located in the Sorensen Student Center. Local retailers will also participate in the annual campaign by selling donation cards at their registers.
United Way has joined the effort by setting up a shared online giving site where individuals can donate using their debit or credit cards. Additionally, 25 food barrels will be placed around the UVU Orem Campus for open collection of non-perishable food items.
