In a historic first, United Airlines announced their selection of two Utah Valley University School of Aviation Sciences students for simultaneous pilot internships beginning September 2013. Emma Gunn and Trevor Snyder were selected from a nationwide field of competitors to fill six intern openings with United for fall semester.

“The quality of our aviation students is very high,” said Jim Green, UVU aviation professor, internship mentor and former professional pilot. “In past internships with United and other airlines, our students have proven to be hardworking, reliable and honest. That, and the fact that we have good faculty and good flight instructors, has earned our aviation program great respect in the industry.”

Gunn, a senior in the Bachelor of Science in Aviation program, has been selected for a 13-week internship at the airline’s Houston, TX, training center. She will be working with professional pilots and completing several hours of simulator training during her time there. Upon graduation in April, she hopes to work as a flight instructor and eventually earn her professional airline transport pilot license.

“I’ve really enjoyed the staff at the School of Aviation,” she said. “They’re huge on trying to help us get our careers started. They care, and they work hard to get these internships set up for us.”

Snyder, who recently completed his bachelor’s degree in aviation science at UVU and is doing graduate work, will be interning at United’s Denver office for three months.

“My instructors are what have really made my experience at UVU great,” Snyder said. “They have always made me feel safe during my flight training. I’ve always felt like I had learned enough and like I was prepared for my exams. I’ve always felt over-prepared because of the quality of instruction in the aviation program at UVU.”

Eight UVU aviation students have earned internships at United Airlines in the past four years, and this year, the UVU School of Aviation Sciences is celebrating its 25th anniversary. More information is available at uvu.edu/aviation.
