UVU 72nd Commencement To Graduate 4,682 Students

Utah Valley University’s 72nd Commencement on Thursday, April 25, will celebrate the institution’s graduating class of 4,682 students receiving degrees ranging from certificates of completion to master degrees.

Commencement exercises begin at 6:30 p.m. at the UCCU Center on UVU’s Orem Campus. The university’s eight individual college and school convocations will be held across campus on Friday, April 26.

Graduates will receive 36 certificates of completion, 1,847 associate degrees, 2,905 baccalaureate degrees and 71 master degrees. UVU’s 2013 graduates represent all 50 U.S. states, with 3,996 students from Utah, and 96 students from foreign countries. Graduates are comprised of a multitude of ethnicities and backgrounds. The youngest graduate is 16 years old while the oldest is 79.

Anousheh Ansari, the first woman of Iranian descent to journey into space and a successful engineer and entrepreneur, will be the featured commencement speaker. She is co-founder, CEO and chairwoman of Telecom Technologies, Inc., and also co-founded and serves as chairwoman of Prodea Systems. A passionate social entrepreneur and active proponent of world-changing technologies, Ansari actively encourages youths to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) degrees. She recently participated in the “Crowd-Sourcing the Space Frontier” panel at South by Southwest (SXSW) conferences and festivals.

Honorary doctorate degrees will be presented to Ansari as well as Janette Hales Beckham, the 10th general president of the LDS Church’s Young Women organization and a former Utah legislator; David G. Neeleman, the founder of JetBlue Airways and Azul Brazilian Airlines; and Doris Buffett, a philanthropist whose Sunshine Lady Foundation has benefited countless individuals seeking an education and ways to improve their lives.

Convocations for UVU’s individual colleges and schools on April 26 will be held as follows: At 8 a.m., the College of Science & Health convocation will be at the UCCU Center, the School of Education convocation will be at the Physical Education Building, and the School of the Arts convocation will be at the Sorensen Student Center Grande Ballroom. At 8:30 a.m., the College of Aviation & Public Services convocation will be at the Provo Airport, Hangar B. At 11 a.m., the Woodbury School of Business convocation will be at the UCCU Center and the University College convocation will be at the Physical Education Building. At 2 p.m., the College of Technology & Computing convocation will be at the UCCU Center. At 5 p.m., the College of Humanities & Social Sciences convocation will be held at the UCCU Center.

Media parking for commencement will be available in the UCCU Center visitor lot, located southwest of the parking booth and in front of the UCCU Center. Due to traffic congestion on Interstate 15, it is recommended that attendees allow extra travel time.
