UVU Students Take First Place At International Marketing Competition

In March, students from UVU’s marketing department attended the American Marketing Association’s 35th annual International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, La., for the first time ever. But far from acting like newcomers, they left an impression — skillfully showcasing their knowledge and abilities to come away with two first place awards.
Senior Heidi Jarvis, from Kansas City, Mo., beat out contestants from 49 other schools to win first place in the national sales competition, while Orem’s Ryan Cope and Provo’s Michael Harrington, also seniors, won the marketing strategy competition. Jarvis competed in the Northwestern sales competition selling Leadgenix SEO services. Cope and Harrington presented their strategy for marketing a steering wheel, hand sensory product.
“The AMA International Collegiate Conference is the premier competitive competition for AMA clubs in the nation, and we are very proud of the students who represented us so well on an international scale,” said Paul Dishman, chair of the Woodbury School of Business’s marketing department. “The honors they received recognize the quality of the UVU marketing student and reaffirm the outstanding quality of the training they receive in our program.”
The conference brings together more than 1,000 marketing students and their faculty advisers for three days of learning and networking each year. Attendees learn about career paths within the marketing field from representatives from top companies, celebrate their AMA chapters and learn chapter management techniques.
The 10 UVU marketing students who attended this year had the opportunity to experience a rigorous, professional environment that tested their education thus far.
“Having the opportunity to spend three days listening to speakers, competing with our peers and networking with professionals is priceless for any student, but especially for those who are about to enter the job market,” Harrington said. “We are so grateful for the support of our school, and we’re honored to be able to represent the business school on an international level.”
The Woodbury School of Business and UVU’s Grants for Engaged Learning Office sponsored the trip. Paige Gardiner, a lecturer in the marketing department and sponsor of the UVU AMA chapter, served as adviser to the group.
Gardiner expressed appreciation for UVU’s willingness to engage students in such a prestigious event: “The students were exposed to other high quality programs from around the nation, and they learned about the standard of marketing and were able to compete,” she said. “It was a privilege to sponsor students that were willing to meet outside of the classroom in order to prepare, compete and excel.”
