Utah Valley University’s Theatre Arts Department is pleased to announce the fourth production of its main stage 2010-2011 season, the comedy “She Stoops to Conquer.” The play opens on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Noorda Theatre, located on the east side of UVU Orem campus.

Originally written in 1773 under the title of “Mistakes of a Night,” “She Stoops to Conquer” is a comedy of manners written by Irish playwright Oliver Goldsmith and has long been considered a classic of English literature.

The story is centered on Kate Hardcastle, who poses as a barmaid in hopes of charming her stuffy suitor, Charles Marlow. As the plot begins to twist and turn, the conniving cast of characters who inhabit the estate learn some hilarious lessons about the true nature of love.

“It’s easy to understand, and really fun to watch,” Director Christopher Clark said. “And we’ve found some ways to draw interesting technological connections to our modern society. I don’t know if Restoration comedy has been performed quite like this before.

“The play asks important questions about relationships. Do we love each other for who we really are, or do we need to become someone else before someone accepts us? And is who we are in private who we really are in public? It’s an issue we run into online all the time, but this play shows us that these questions were being asked in the 18th century as well,” Clark said.

The production will run Dec. 2-11. Evening performances will begin at 7:30 pm, with Saturday matinees at 1 p. pm on Dec. 4 and 11. Tickets can be purchased online at the UVU Theatre website www.uvu.edu/theatre, by phone at 801-863-PLAY, or in person at the UVU theatre box office, located on the east side of the campus near the Gunter Trades Building.
