Campus Drive and pedestrian path now open!

August 22, 2012 by UVU Blog

It’s been a long summer, but Campus Drive is back in business! The newly refinished road (east of the main entrance roundabout) is now open, along with the pedestrian underpass connecting campus to the south side of University Parkway.  A new bus stop at the bottom of 1200 South will also make its debut on August 27, the first day of class (the temporary bus stop at the metered lot will continue to be used until then). We truly appreciate your patience with these projects, and are happy to see our campus infrastructure take a big step forward.

  1. Jim,
Speaking of “dusty” roads, the Campus Drive at the bottom of the hill by the LDS Institute and the new construction site is become strewn with gravel and rocks.
I ride my bicycle down the hill each day and it is becoming a safety risk with the amount of small rocks and gravel on the bike path.
Aren’t they supposed to sweep up after their trucks drop this stuff?

    Thanks;
    Fred

  2. Is there a way to walk from Village on the Parkway to the UVU campus, and vice versa?

  3. Thanks for your questions, Fred and Louise.

    1) We will ask the contractor to do a better job of sweeping in that area.

    2) It is not easy because of the busyness of University Parkway. The sidewalk is on the north side of University Parkway. You would need to cross at the light at Geneva Road and then walk along the sidewalk. It would be best to take your shuttle.

  • Alternative Transportation Tips

Though we can certainly alleviate congestion by parking in the right places at the right times (see our Parking Tips section), you may be better off avoiding parking altogether. Have you considered:

    • Riding the bus?

UVU students, faculty and staff are eligible for $50/year UTA bus passes. A gallon of gas is averaging more than $3.50 in Utah these days — that $50 is probably worth looking into, even if it's just for a day or two each week. Your UV ID card, which you can activate at Campus Connection, functions as your bus pass, and is valid on all UTA buses, express buses, TRAX and Frontrunner. For more details, visit Campus Connection.

    • Biking? Skateboarding? Rollerblading?

When have you ever seen bikers circling bike racks, waiting for somebody to pull out so they can zip in and take their spot? That game stays in the parking lots (and I really doubt you'll miss it). There are bike racks all over campus; keep an eye out for those closest to your building and give your car a break. But remember: bikes, skateboards and rollerblades are allowed on sidewalks, but aren't permitted on plazas, rails or concourses.

    • Carpooling?

You'll save on gas. You get to use the HOV lane on I-15. You'll have an automatic support group that commits you to getting to class (or work) on time. There's a lot to like about the carpool.

    • Walking?

If you happen to live close enough to campus, take the opportunity to stretch your legs. And if you don't — have you ever looked at the outer rows of parking stalls in the lots at the northwest end of campus? They're often totally empty. Why not make a conscious decision to park out there and then count your walk to campus as exercise? It might take you a few extra minutes, but as long as you budget that into your travel time, it will be extra minutes well spent. Your heart (and UVU Facilities) will thank you.
