UVU paves the way for Pre-Health

Jennifer Orchard, Pre-Health Counselor for UVU’s Career/Academic Counseling Center

For many years UVU (or as UVSC) was seen from the outside as a fall-back plan; a stepping stone to ‘better’ undergraduate institutions. That reputation is now being shattered at UVU.

Many of UVU’s pre-med students are homegrown Utahns. Sadly, many have the idea that graduating from and doing pre-med classes at UVU will impede their dreams of attending any of the top medical schools. But tracing the root of this rumor has never led to the feet of any member of medical school admissions committees or recruiters. Usually it turns out to be the unsolicited opinion of an uncle, a friend, a coworker, a pre-med student from another university or the famous ‘somebody.’

When ‘somebody’ starts talking about your chances of getting into medical school, whether or not what they’re saying is actually true, you’re going to listen because, let’s face it, you want to get in.
That being the case — please listen to this ‘somebody’ and pay close attention to the following sentence:

You can go to any medical school you want after going to UVU!

UVU students are currently attending and have been accepted to top medical schools across the country, including the University of Utah, NYU, Michigan State, Penn State, Kirksville and Boston University, to name a few.

UVU offers the following Pre-Health programs:

Pre-Physical Therapy
Pre-Occupational Therapy
Pre-Physician Assistant
Pre-Radiology Tech
Pre-Respiratory Therapy

I heard that a couple of years ago 100% of UVU pre-dental students who applied to dental school were accepted. I don’t know if you can confirm that, but I was extremely impressed.

I’ll get back to you on that, Lori. Thanks for the question.
