Coming attraction: the Student Life and Wellness Center

15 March 2011 7 Comments

Dr. Bob Rasmussen, UVU dean of students

Thanks to the foresight and direction of student leaders, both past and present, a new Student Life and Wellness Center is on the way. The new building is going to be a fantastic addition to UVU’s campus.

The elements of the Wellness Center will embody the theme of “Body, Mind, and Spirit,” helping students achieve wellness in a variety of ways. The Center will incorporate spaces for which the students have been specifically asking.

First, an exercise component — everything from spinning, aerobic and yoga rooms to cardio cinema to weight rooms with free and machine weights.

Next comes the recreational component, with rock and bouldering walls and a new Outdoor Adventure Center. Intramurals will facilitate new basketball courts, a multi-purpose court for indoor soccer and other court sports.

We’ll offer a wellness component to teach proper exercise, eating choices and mindful approaches to a healthy lifestyle.

The Student Life and Wellness Center will also incorporate a reflection center wherein an individual can meditate and rejuvenate his or her body, mind, and spirit, as the theme suggests.

One of the most sought-after features is a large lounge in which students can hang out in a relaxed environment to rest, study, play and see each other. To sweeten the deal, popular franchised food will be offered in this area.

Another campus-wide issue — parking — will be addressed with the construction of a 550-stall parking garage that will be built in conjunction with the Student Life and Wellness Center.

The programing stage for this building will be finished in April. A design team will then be selected to create a showpiece that will be placed in the center of campus.

If all goes to plan, you will be enjoying this new space in 2013.

I am so excited for the new Student Life and Wellness Center to be built! This college campus needs a place to go to relax and rejuvinate your mind. I look forward to the showpiece that will be placed in the center of campus! Good job and congratulations on the leaders that made this possible! One more thing, where is the location of the current Student Life and Wellness Center? I would like to get in on some yoga! Get back to me please!

Thanks for the comment, Anna. Bob says:

“The Wellness Programs are a part of Student Health Services and are located in the Sorensen Student Center room 221.”

    Hope that helps!

    Bob,

This is great! Love to see all these things coming to fruition that we talked about and planned so many years ago. Congrats!

As a swimmer and All American Water Polo Player in high school from here in state, I was saddened to not hear any mention of answimming facility in the new Life and Wellness Building. Was it something left out of the article, or worse, not included In the building plans? I’d love to hear the reasoning behind the elimination of the ideas, if it was!

Thanks for all your hard work!

Congratulations on your new Student Life and Wellness Center! What a wonderful addition to your campus. A fundamental part of good studying is to exercise well, get the serotonin levels up and boost one’s cardio-vascular fitness. It all helps one focus whilst studying, and also ensures a good night’s sleep. I hope the center will have plenty of low-impact exercise bikes and elliptical trainers, and also a swimming-pool (the latter wasn’t mentioned in your article but I hope that was an oversight on your part). All the best to you and your students.

This all sounds great and I’m excited for it but why isn’t there a pool? That would go with the theme and, I believe, is needed at the school.
