Upcoming Advisement Trainings

Advisement Forum,

We want to remind you all that we have several trainings coming up this week that you are all invited to attend (space permitting).

  • “Serving the One and Inspiring the Many” (Wednesday, January 27th from 3:00-4:00 pm) by Wade Oliver — While the nature of the work of academic advisors is inherently pro-social, meaning that it is for the benefit of other people.  The impact advisors might have on the success of students can be greatly enhanced by how they approach the prosocial nature of it.  Through the application of research regarding prosocial behavior, both generally and in terms of employment settings, this workshop will discuss in a fun and informative way the potentially powerful impact that advisors and other higher education professionals can have in the success of students.
  • “Mental Health Series: Introduction and Working with Students with Depression and Anxiety” (Thursday January 28th from 11:00-12:30) by Carolyn Johnson, Counselors from Accessibility Services, and Tom Liljegren)  — Research suggests that more than a quarter of college students have a diagnosable mental illness. Mental illness can have a large effect on a student’s success both in and out of the classroom and can put them at-risk for many different negative outcomes. This training will introduce how advisors can help be sensitive to student’s mental health challenges and focus specifically on how advisors can work with students who struggle with depression and anxiety.

Additionally, due to a time conflict we have had to reschedule the had to reschedule the scheduled “iAdvising” Training that was scheduled for 10:00 am tomorrow morning. We have pushed the training back about one month—it will now be held on Thursday, March 3rd from 10:00 to 11:00 am in LC 306.

Additionally a full schedule of Spring Trainings has been attached for your information.

Have a good Monday,

Tom

… spread the word to the advising community about Evan Widders’s workshops on March 23rd. He has a ton of useful information about the key role advisors can play in encouraging students to pursue IDST emphases and minors, and the ways that IDST programs can help students identify/build efficient paths to graduation.

Exception To Walk Policy For Commencement

If a student is finishing their graduation requirements in the Summer 2016 semester, they are SUMMER GRADUATES and MUST APPLY for SUMMER graduation. Students graduating in Summer 2016 will be invited to attend the April 2017 Commencement ceremonies. If they are unable to attend at that time, they may walk in the April 2016 ceremonies on an EXCEPTION basis and are not eligible to walk with Honors (cords or medallions) or be a candidate for Valedictorian. Due to the high rate of exception participants who do not graduate , this policy is NOT to be advertised and is discouraged.

PLEASE advise SUMMER EXCEPTION TO WALK STUDENTS to apply for Summer 2016 Graduation AFTER February 5th and BEFORE March 4th.  There will be a page in the Online Graduation Application to indicate their desire to walk as an Exception.

Non-Exception to Walk Summer students may apply between February 5th and June 3rd.

Thanks for all you do! 🙂

Sincerely,

UVU Graduation Office
