Our goal is to increase awareness of and commitment to this role. In support of this goal, the Student Advocate Award is given annually to one faculty member and one staff member who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to student success.

We are currently accepting nominations for the 2013 Student Advocate Awards. Please review the nomination process and submit your recommendations to our office by 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2013.

Advisor Training Reminder

Dear Advisement Forum,

Good Morning!  This is a note to remind you that we have a number of excellent training opportunities this week and invite you to attend.

The week’s sessions are as follows:

Technology for Advising Students at a Distance (Intermediate)
Tuesday, February 19th 10:00 a.m. – LC 306

Many Advisors, and even more students, have expressed an interest in being able to participate in an advising session when the Advisor and Student may be hundreds of miles apart. Often we simply resort to a phone appointment and try our best to make the experience a successful one, but the constant frustration is that you are missing the true ‘face-to-face’ interaction that is so valuable in an advising setting. We now have an option and the resources available on campus to provide our Advisors and Students the ability to have a ‘face-to-face’ conversation when they are at a distance. Come learn about some of the tools and options available for use on campus that will prepare you to engage in video advising sessions with your student tomorrow! The second session builds on the first.

Presenter: Clint Moser, Advisement Technology Coordinator

Online Appointment Scheduling for Advisors
Friday, February 22nd 10:00 a.m. – LC 306

Interested in allowing students to schedule an appointment to see you without having to have the back and forth of finding a time that works for both of you? Online appointment scheduling makes that possible. You determine your availability, your reasons for visits, and how long you want visits to be, then allow the appointment scheduling program do the rest, including sending email confirmations, reminders, and a follow-up. Come see how online appointment scheduling can simplify your and your students’ lives, and free up time to do what is most important, spending one-on-one time advising your students.

Presenter: Clint Moser, Advisement Technology Coordinator

Please sign up for the session(s) you plan to attend through our reservation system at this link:

If you have any difficulties with the system, please contact Rachael Solomon (  or x6556).

FYI – Summer Math Updates

Dear Advisors,

  • I want to make you aware of the semester long summer courses that the math and developmental math departments are offering this Summer.  If you remember from the previous Summer, several advisors expressed a need for semester-long math courses.  Here are the courses that we are offering this summer that ARE NOT block courses:
  1. Mat 0950 section 005
  2. Mat 1010 section 014
  3. Math 1050 section 011
  4. Math 1050 section 603
  5. Math 1050 section T01 (this is a TV course)
  6. Math 1100 section 601
  • In the Fall we will be offering the mat 1010/math 1050 combo class again.  We will also be offering a new class, mat 1020.  Mat 1020 is a class that can be used in place of mat 1010 as prerequisite for math 1030 or math 1040.  Max Aeschbacher will be coming to the advisor forum on February 21st to give the forum more information regarding these classes.

Thank you-

Monica Ferreyra

Policy Update – New Retake Policy for Accuplacer

Effective today, February 6, 2013, the retake procedure for Accuplacer is as follows:

Three retakes are permitted per six week window, with at least one day between each attempt.

The cost remains $10 per first attempt and $10 per section for retakes.  Non-students are charged $50 for the battery.

This retake procedure replaces the allowed one retake every two weeks, which was problematic when students were nearing deadlines, therefore petitioning departments to request exceptions.
